  • Looks Like We'll See Dow at 10K - Soon?
The market keeps trying to go up in the face of increasingly dreadful news so I suppose anything is possible, particularly if the participants are prepared to hang their hat on threadbare rubbish like this article. In the end reality will reign, and the reality just keeps getting darker and darker.

  • Surveying the Carnage
Yes I agree. Merrill was well on the way to joining Lehman in bankruptcy and then Lewis comes out of leftfield with the takeover offer and at a ridiculously high price. I can only think that this was a desperate effort by Lewis at BAC to prop the market up. If that was the intention, then it failed miserably. BAC gets smashed and Merrill is right back to where it was on Friday night. Looks like the market has worked it out already. I don't think this deal will ever eventuate.

  • The Great Consumer Crash of 2009
Mate the market is going up today in the face of a lot of bad news because Cramer and the rest of the cheerleaders keep screaming it's a bottom, it's a bottom, it's a bottom. Denial remains the name of the game. There is no point in getting angry at the stupidity of others. Reality will exact revenge on those who ignore the facts. Just worry about yourself

  • Illogical Justifications for Owning U.S. Treasuries
I am an Australian. I have my money parked in a 24 hour money market account of an Australian bank. It is fully guaranteed by the government up to a million dollars, I checked a couple of days ago and it is currently yielding around 6.5% and I can get the money virtually immediately. It doesn't seem that difficult to me.

  • WSJ: A Frightening Indictment of Our Society
Great article. If this was a truly free market like that pathetic soul George Bush imagines it is, then all of these banks would have failed by now. I don't profess to know where all of this is going to lead, but it aint going to be pretty.

  • Yes, Fund Managers Really Do Underperform
Diversification is the killer. The most common advice you get from so called "financial experts and advisors"is to diversify and it is supurb advice as long as you want to go nowhere. Everything just evens out and you end up never making any real money. You need to know what you're doing so you can pick winners and then you need the balls to go for it with everything you've got. Most fund managers don't have these attributes but they don't need them. They have big fat fees to fall back on. It is very very unlikely that you will ever get rich relying on others for investment advice. You have to learn to do things for yourself.

  • Everybody Hates Merrill Lynch This Week
Great article Kirk. In many ways, Merrill has led the way in this "Sodom and Gomorrah" market. If there was any justice in this world, they would all be turned to salt.
