Options Activity Suggests Likely Suitor for EMC

VMW's run-up certainly did not bring EMC along for the ride. At the peak on Halloween, the difference between EMC's market cap and its stake in VMW had narrowed so much that either (a) EMC's operations were close to worthless, or (b) VMW was grossly overvalued in the market.

Either way, a nice trade at the time was to buy EMC and sell VMW short. As it turns out, EMC is down 40% from that peak. But because VMW is down more than 70%, this trade would have produced a very nice return.

Wells Fargo (WFC) will become the largest U.S. bank by branches with its bid for Wachovia (WB), after Citigroup (C) withdrew from compromise negotiations late yesterday on concerns about the quality of some of Wachovia's assets. Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."
