GMAC Bailout Flaws: No Appreciation of History

It's possible there is no answer to our financial problems. Try as we might for easy answers to GM and everybody elses problems, it just might be that we now have to pay the piper. The piper being, businesses going bankrupt, high unemployment, etc. You can only do so much with fuzzy math. The numbers haven't added up for several years now, and the more we try to manipulate them the worse off we are.

What Will Happen If America Returns to an Historical Savings Rate?

One thing I didn't see mentioned in comparison of Japan to US is America's growing illegal (and legal) immigration problem. People flocking in here by the thousands to take what few jobs that are left after corporate America decided to head for greener pastures.

As far as GMAC and the banks go...why would they ever have loaned money to anyone that couldn't repay; I still don't get it.
As for business..I don't see anything secure except funeral homes and the lawyers who draw up the bankruptcy papers.
All this bad news is probably good for us in the long run. It will teach us to live within our means like most people used to do.
I remember back when I was just starting school that when a neighbor bought something new such as a car or major home appliance it meant that he was doing well. When I see a neighbor doing that today it means to me that he has refinanced his loan.
In the future I hope loans will be harder to get and interest rates will rise so that people will only buy what they can afford and the rest of us won't be called upon to pay their loans off for them.

Please don't encourage Congress to do anything...the last thing the working people need is another gas tax. They enact a gas tax when it is low priced and it is here to stay forever, even when gas gets to $4.50 a gallon. With Democrats in there will be enough taxes to go around without any encouragement.

Lehman Bankruptcy: Crisis Management Via Crisis Export?

I guess that the fact that these big banks are hoarding the money now pretty well proves they didn't need the bailout to start with! The small businesses, retailers, etc. that went and are going out of business are the ones that needed help, and the government wouldn't even consider bailing them out. And I never heard of any $400,000 vacations for retailers this year!!

What Happened to the American Dream?

Another problem could be put squarely on the shoulders of the "little guy" and that is the little guy trying to keep up with his neighbors by borrowing money that he hasn't the means to pay back. We all think we are entitled to a new car and house as soon as we graduate from high school. Earlier generations wouldn't dream of those purchases until they had quite a bit of money in the bank and a decent job. The best thing to happen to us would be for banks to refuse loans to people who can't show means of repayment.

Has Cutting Interest Rates Saved Anyone?

I'm in favor of raising interest rates..a lot. At least people then could put their retirement money in the bank and get something to live on. The way it is now you are practically forced to invest in something else and if you're like me you'll make less money than normal bank interest...unless you invest in Lehman or Madoff, then you won't have anything!!

Wells Fargo, with a bid valued at $11.4B, expects the purchase to be completed by the end of the year, and denies it will have to absorb assets shakier than originally thought. Bearish Calls:

Computer Sciences (CSC) -- This is a company that was going to be bought, but they passed up the chance. Now I don't want to buy it."
Annaly Mortgage (NLY) -- I think this is a business model that needs to borrow money. Definitively do not buy."
Northrop Grumman (NOC) -- You can't own the defense stocks right now. If I had to own one, I'd look at Lockheed Martin (LMT) with its good dividend.
