Why Is Merrill Lynch Trading Significantly below BAC's $29 Offer?
This morning, 9/17, Bob over CNBC mentions that, in the premarket, MER and BAC shares are not moving in sync. There must be some info of which I am not privileged to know.

Last Gasp of a Doomed Currency
I read, in the weekend edition of Financial Times that, by adding on more and more debt and by bringing in FRE and FNM debt onto the Federal Gov't's balance sheet, the risks of the Gov't's losing its tripe A rating has been greatly increased.

Selling Short America and the Rest of the World
The only problem is that the bailout only helps the rich and the well-informed. I read a hedge fund was ahead by more than $1 billion for buying FRE and FNM bonds just a day or two before the announcement while a "retail" customer, reading the reassuring words from the Fed, bought 25,000 shares of FRE stock at $5, which was duly reduced to less than a dollar a couple of days later.

Short Financial ETFs: Watch Out for the Fannie/Freddie Effect
For a calendar spread, buy Oct 110P and sell Nov 110P, what are actual transactions at expiration? Assuming Oct is exercised, one has to dish out cash to accept the shares. So, what are cash requirements? In this market, a couple of months is a long period. All these "strategies,"... it seems to this novice, are easily said than none -- indeed, unless cash requirements are fully disclosed, they are meaningless.

Dollar Rally Likely a Short-Term Phenomenon
In today's (9/5) Financial Times, columnist John Authers cited a "Dollar Smile Hypothesis," advanced by Stephen Jen, Morgan Stanley's currency strategist. Auther's commentary is too terse. Does anyone care to expand on this hypothesis?

      Sarah Palin: Wall Street's Candidate
Except for oil drilling, Palin was silent on other economic issues. Ditto for McCain's speech last night (9/4). How would the ticket provide a balanced budget, as several commentators above mentioned, is a mystery to me.
